The Need For An Online Database For Student Results Checking In N.S.U.K

By: Divinelove Udorji

The internet is an increasingly important aspect of modern tertiary institution. The internet was initially developed by the U.S Defence Department and was at one time only popular within the research community alone. Today, the internet has an impact on any facet of our life including business operation, education, communication, entertainment etc. People are using the internet to perform different tasks quickly and easier. The banks are also providing the facility of online banking, which affords their customers the ability to check their account details and also make financial transactions using the internet.

The world has become a global village because of internet and the internet has practically made everything in life much easier. The internet has enabled systems of obtaining and recording information much more efficient and effective. While a database is an integrated collection of logically related data elements. Thus, a database is an application that manages data and allows fast storage and retrieval of such data.

Computer records are much harder to misplace than realms of paper records. This old method of students having to visit the notice boards to check their results has many setbacks and disadvantages. Thus there is the need to provide an alternative means of processing students results rather than the dependence on traditional notice boards. Most often when semester results are pasted on the notice board, they are usually vandalised. The use of internet also makes the results and information records readily available at all time.

This will also provide web access to student records system. It is also a means by which students can check their personal data anytime and anywhere. A school's official website shouldn't be limited to student registration portal and news items alone. But should also include student informations and results for easy accessibility.

With this online database students could access their informations and semester results anywhere, any day and anytime, the student is only required to produce a username and password which is issued by the administrator when he/she wants to visit a class result page. The student can view the course work for each course, view the examination score for each course, view the cumulative point average, grade point average etc. The system administrator enters other necessary information which can be stored and accessed by the students. The system administrator manages the student accounts, enters the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and the Grade Point Average (GPA).

Students are classified according to their academic levels and departments. 200level Mass Communication students select the 200level and then their department items on the home page. A login page opens and the students is required to enter password and username to view 200level Mass Communication page. The result page displays the result for all members of that class. A 200level Mass Communication student can recognise his/her result only through his/her Matriculation Number as no name is written. The System Administrator also possesses the right to issue username and passwords to students. He maintains the departmental database and uploads student's result.

The website commences with the home page which is accessible without any username or password. The login page validates and authenticates students before they are allowed to view their results. By this mechanism unauthorised users cannot access the result page.

In my opinion I think it is out rightly wrong for an higher institution of learning to be operating on an outdated form of result compilation and pasting in this modern era and with the advent of the internet, instead of maximising the full potentials of the internet. If only there could be an internet database in Nasarawa State University, where student's result could be uploaded by the school administrator, this would go along way to alleviate the plight of students who have to travel from far distances just to check there results, which probably on reaching the school premises might discover that the results have been removed or damaged by some scrupulous elements, thereby going through the rigorous process of meeting his/her Head Of Department just to access his/her results.

With this Internet service, student results can be accessed any time and irrespective of location either by the students or their parent. This Internet Infrastructure can be of immense benefit to this institution. It will make result processing and management in Nasarawa State University much easier, efficient and reliable.
